Romania, the land of all opportunities
I live in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Many people probably heard about Romania as being a poor third world country (which is far from the truth), although i'm not amazed by this (how would i expect them to hear about Romania if they barely know what's happening around them). Well, Romania's been through a lot of changes since the revolution in 1989, governments changed, peoples mentality changed, although some didn't really understood what democracy stands for and they think they "have the right to do whatever they want". Why i say this? Simple, Romania is the country of big contrasts, it has an important number of very rich people, and a really high amount of poor people. The middle class barely exists. Most of the "high class" people got rich after the revolution in 1989 (how they got rich ... well most of them by destroying what was created by the communists, it didn't matter if it was good or not, everything had to be destroyed, buying cheap land or really cheap industrial equipment and selling it outside country at it's real value). The bad part was, nothing was really rebuild afterward. Industry is almost dead, what still exists is buried in debts or was revived by foreign investors.
The bad part is that this "rich over night people" don't really know what to do with their money or how to run a business. I worked for firm that was providing hotel and restaurant management solutions, and i've made contact with many hotel or restaurant owners. I can tell you that around 40% of our customers barely knew how to run their business. The idea of i am the one with the money so i will do whatever i want, cause it's my money is almost everywhere. Many people don't know or don't want to take an advice, for the good of their business. If you wanna visit Bucharest, careful where you gonna check in, not everything is what it looks or as it should be.
My advice, check Hoteluri Bucuresti to see Bucharest hotels information, or try Rezervari Hoteluri Bucuresti (maybe the best travel agency for Romania hotels and Bucharest) As a tourist in Romania, you got to be very careful, otherwise you might get really dissapointed. Romania is a beautiful country with really high tourism potential, unfortunately, few knows how to evaluate this properly, and get the most of it. Travel agencies number are growing year by year, too bad few of them focus on the tourists needs, most of them are focusing on the hotels needs.(doesn't matter if the hotel is offering bad services, as long as you they get their % from the hotel, everything is good) WRONG! As a conclusion, "Romania is a great place with a bad management", even so, you should try seeing the good parts, and inform yourself a bit, and afterward, maybe you'll change your opinion.

Interesting perspective. It sounds like the hotels are the good parts. At least some of the hotels are good parts.
